Frequently Asked Questions
How many massage sessions will I need?
There is no one answer to this question. Everyone is different and responds uniquely to massage therapy. What I tell all my clients is to get in the habit of listening to your body. Some people may think they need massage on a weekly basis but soon realize that once a month is more suitable. Others, however, may start out getting a session every three to four weeks but find their body responds best to sessions every one or two weeks. Beyond physiological differences, external stressors must be taken into account. If you are getting massage to help manage a sports injury, you will probably want to get massage much more frequently if you chose to continue playing your sport before you’ve fully recovered.
Further, unlike some practitioners who want to get you on their schedule on a regular basis, I try to find and resolve the root problem of your chronic pain in as few sessions as possible. I believe that the human body has an amazing ability to heal itself, very quickly in some cases, given the right support. My goal is to get you pain free and back to 100% as soon as possible, so that ultimately you won't need bodywork and more importantly, so that your quality of life improves.
But if you do require more sessions, it will be because you decide you need more. After all, you know your body best!

How long is a massage session?
Sessions last a minimum of 75 minutes but may last longer depending on your situation. Sometimes the body doesn't reveal the root cause of the problem in a specified time frame. By extending the session for as long as is appropriate, coupled with relevant "homework" (stretches, exercises, etc.), the body is supported in healing itself.
If a session does last longer than 75 minutes, you will not be charged more. Unlike other practitioners, I do not charge by how long the session takes. The fee is for the session and the session will last as long as it needs to.

What is fascia?
Fascia is a type of connective tissue that is continuous throughout the body. It is, in essence, a very thin sheet of tissue that wraps and supports all your muscles and internal organs. Fascia even wraps individual muscle fibers and allows them to move independently of each other. Any adhesions that occur within the muscle fascia can impede proper muscle function and may cause pain and discomfort.
Why should I drink water after a session?
During a session the connective tissue called fascia becomes softer and more relaxed. This softening occurs because the fascia becomes more hydrated. The water it absorbs comes primarily from the circulatory system. This process can cause a temporary dehydration. Without replenishing this fluid, the bloodstream will start to pull moisture back from the fascia. The fascia will then tighten up as it loses its water and eradicate whatever benefit was gained from the massage.
